On yesterday’s Talk of Iowa on Iowa Public Radio, there was a great show on “the “modern library”, with a focus on research libraries. It featured the heads of the three regents schools. I caught part of the show as I was driving to the University of Iowa Library to do some research in Special Collections (uispeccoll).
The show was called “Research Libraries Not Just for Research Anymore”. I think that title is misleading - the way we do research has evolved to include online media and other technology, and encourages collaborative research through the use of group study spaces…although the way we do research has changed, supporting research and learning is still the main goal of the library. Just because many libraries now have a cafe doesn’t mean our focus has shifted to serving hot beverages.
Libraries are about learning. I don’t know why in 2014 it is still shocking that libraries have more to offer than “just books”.
